The Track "Ben Pode Santa Maria (13th century, Galician-Portuguese)" is taken from Azam Ali's fantastic solo debut Album "Portals Of Grace" (2002). Listen and enjoy it. Having made her name as the ethereal vocalist of Vas & Niyaz, Azam Ali ventures forth with this shimmering solo debut. Openly influenced by Hildegard von Bingen, "Portals Of Grace" continues Ali's long relationship with the music and stories of medieval Europe, drawing from Sephardic, Breton, and Latin sources, to name a few. About the track: (Cantiga de Santa Maria - 13th century, Galician-Portuguese) The Cantigas de Santa Maria is the largest collection of medieval Iberian monophonic songs to have survived along with the texts. They are compiled from some 400 songs that celebrate the divine virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and recount the tales of the miracles she performed. It is widely believed that in the 13th and 14th century, the Jewish and Arab musicians of the courts played a very important role in the performance of the Cantigas. This piece tells of how the Virgin Mary restored the sight of a goldsmith of Chartres.
