Obama cements Afghan stay year after Bin Laden's death
Bombs and gunfire have struck the Afghan capital Kabul... shortly after a visit by Barack Obama. The Taliban claimed responsibility and said the attacks were in retaliation for the US president's visit. Afghan police say suicide bombers attacked a compound where foreign workers live. At least seven people have been killed and almost 20 injured. The US president's visit to Kabul came one year since the killing of Osama Bin Laden by American special forces. In a speech at Bagram airbase, Obama admitted Washington is holding direct talks with the Taliban and said many in the terrorist group are interested in peace. Obama and Karzai also signed an agreement outlining ties in the decade after the planned US troop pullout in 2014. RT's Gayane Chichakyan has more. Panetta: Soldier could face death penalty; Obama;"US 'heartbroken' over Afghan killings"
The US Army soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan men, women and children in a house-to-house shooting rampage could face the death penalty, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. Afghan protesters angered by the weekend killings of 16 civilians blocked a major highway Tuesday as US President Barack Obama said US officials were "heartbroken" by the deaths. A US Army sergeant is accused of killing the Afghan villagers in what top commanders say was a rampage Sunday morning near Kandahar. A protest in Jalalabad, near the border with Pakistan, drew hundreds of people Tuesday, with demonstrators blocking the highway to Kabul, provincial government spokesman Ahmad Zaii Abdulzai said. "We are in the process of trying to reopen," Abdulzai told CNN. Afghan President Hamid Karzai issued a fresh denunciation of the attack Tuesday. And in Washington, Obama told reporters that "the United States takes this as seriously as if it was our own citizens and our own children who were murdered." "We are heartbroken at the loss of innocent life," he said. "The killing of innocent civilians is outrageous, and it is unacceptable. It is not who we are as a country and it does not represent our military."

'Obama, most pro-war US president'
The United States and Afghanistan have signed an agreement to extend the US presence in the war-torn country to another decade beyond 2014. Shortly after arriving in Afghanistan under cover late on Tuesday night, US President Barack Obama signed a deal with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai to provide aid, advisers, and support for a period of 10 years after the expected departure of foreign combat troops in 2014, CBS News reported. Press TV has conducted an interview with author and Afghanistan expert, Mohammed Daud Miraki to further discuss the issue.

Exit Rush: No cash, no Afghanistan?
There's been a surge of violence in Afghanistan - with bomb blast in the north of the country killing at least nine people. The escalation comes as the country prepares to take full control of security in more areas - and a week before NATO's summit in Chicago. US massacre of Afghan civilians continue-Comment-03-15-2012
www.presstv.com George: The great war-leaders Barack Obama and David Cameron were enjoying themselves at a basketball game when the blood of women and children was still wet on the ground in Kandahar. An American soldier murdered sixteen innocent civilians, twelve of them women and children; murdered in cold blood in their own homes. But the Cameron and Obama show looked liked a great deal of fun when they should have been bowing their heads in shame.

Panetta Disarms Marines in Afghanistan Amid Fears of Possible Rogue Marine Shooting
It has been denied that Secretary of Defense Panetta's disarming of Marines in Afghanistan March 14 had anything to do with a rogue Army sniper's killing of sixteen Afghan civilians earlier in the week, but many are calling the move highly unusual, and one source states disarming Marines in a combat zone is contrary to military protocol. Approximately two hundred Marines were told to leave their weapons outside a tent while listening to Panetta's speech, but many state disarming the Marines will lead to a morale problem due to a high official distrusting his own troops. Sources state the Marines felt uncomfortable being without their weapons in what is essentially a war zone. What many considered a rush to judgement given the the rogue US sniper's history of PTSD and TBI (traumatic brain injury), Leon Panetta had stated almost immediately that the soldier could face the death penalty. This was odd and hypocritical to many, given that many feel the Obama administration ostensibly armed drug cartels with Fast and Furious weapons that were used to kill hundreds of Mexican citizens, and at least two US citizens, Border Patrol agent Brian Terry and ICE agent Jaime Zapata, and no one has called for the death penalty in these cases, let alone actual charges being filed. 3/14/12 By Kris Zane Produced by Obama Files web.me.com Obama Files supports Newt Gingrich for President www.newt.org To volunteer as part of Gingrich's social media team or in any other way please go to www.newt.org

GOP candidates follow Ron Paul's lead on Afghanistan
With the recent happening in Afghanistan more and more people are questioning the US presence in Afghanistan. US officials are debating either or not to expediting the troop withdrawal in one of longest wars in US history. Now the GOP presidential hopefuls who at one point advocated the war in Afghanistan are now asking to bring the troops home early, but of the pack one voice has stayed consistent, Ron Paul. Federal Lunacy: Obama's Endless Wars for Profit with Paul Craig Roberts 1/2
The US is famous for going to other countries with goals ranging from retaliation to installing democracy to stopping a civil war. And quite often the US government and the military alike are surprised at what they find: that people in those countries don't want them there and, in many cases, will risk or sacrifice their lives to make sure they leave. We're seeing a new low point in America's longest war, unfolding as we speak - riots in Afghanistan, as citizens there protest the burning of Korans by US military personnel at Bagram airbase. Some American soldiers have been killed and many more Afghan citizens are dying as well. And there's beginning to be a sense that the battle to win the hearts and minds there is simply impossible. Ten years of US failure in Afghanistan
May 1st is not only May Day, but it also marks the one year anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden. In a surprise visit to Kabul, Afghanistan, President Obama arrived under a veil of secrecy to give a speech in the middle of the night from Bagram airbase. Countless lives have been lost and hundreds of billions of dollars have been spent in the longest war in the history of the US. Is this visit just a victory lap from the president to remind us that the war has been worth it? Jake Diliberto, RT blogger and retired US Marine, joins RT's Abby Martin for more. Afghanistan: Are NATO troops out of control?-The Agenda-03-03-2012
Angry protests have swept across Afghanistan after it emerged copies of the Holy Qur'an were deliberately destroyed by soldiers. Some Afghans and at least two American soldiers have died during a number of violent reactions despite apologies from US President Barack Obama, US Ambassador Ryan Crocker and various NATO chiefs. Obama said the incident was unintentional and pledged a full investigation while Afghanistan's leader Hamid Karzai told members of parliament that a US officer was responsible for the burning and that it was done "out of ignorance". The incident at the US military base at Bagram north of Kabul is not the first case of Qur'anic abuse by NATO forces and assurances have now been given that all 130000 foreign troops serving in Afghanistan would be trained within the next two weeks on how to identify, store and handle religious material. But this is not the first time the actions of NATO troops have shocked Afghans into reacting violently. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is currently heading a major inquiry, into a video showing a number of US Marines urinating on the bodies of Afghan dead in the province of Helmand last year.

Hastings on Afghan War: 'Spin is Their Best Weapon'
We'll continue to talk about the fallout from the massacre of 16 civilians in Afghanistan, allegedly by a US army staff sergeant. President Obama promised a full investigation today, and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said that the death penalty is a possibility in this case. But where the bigger questions lie are of course how this tragic event falls into the war effort as a whole. Rolling Stone's Michael Hastings discusses.
