We take a look at Americas new pragmatic approach. One such character is Gul Agha Sherzai, aka The Bulldozer and Governor of Nangarhar for the last five years. After striking a political deal with President Karzai, he became a powerbroker to be reckoned with. Ruling from his Jalalabad palace, Sherzai shows off his power: The Taliban is no danger. I have defeated them. By Afghan standards, security in his region has drastically improved along with an impressive fall in drugs production. Its hard to argue that hes been anything but a success enthuse US counter-narcotics officials. However, his past is less than pristine. An expert on the region says: To be an effective leader there, at some point you had to have been involved in the commission of atrocities, together with the accumulation of enormous wealth and that means Opium.' Sherzai allegedly got wealthy during his time as governor of Kandahar taking a cut from the opium profits from the area. While his former associate has been serving a life-sentence in the US, hes been enjoying a high-profile collaboration with Washington. Why? Theres a perception among the West that hes somebody who can be rehabilitated. He was simply deemed more useful. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called for an investigation into what is described as the biggest coordinated Taliban attacks this year. Karzai says intelligence failures on the part of US-led forces allowed the militants to sneak into the most secure neighborhoods. The weekend assault in the capital Kabul and elsewhere left over 50 people--including four civilians and 11 Afghan soldiers --dead. Washington has dismissed Karzai's claim, saying the attacks were likely carried out by the Pakistan-based Haqqani network. This comes weeks ahead of the NATO summit in Chicago, where Karzai is expected to ink a strategic pact with the US. Meanwhile, the US is reportedly gearing up for a major offensive in the war-torn nation. Reports say the US-led spring offensive will be in the regions that control the main access routes into Kabul. Afghanistan's history, internal political development, foreign relations, and very existence as an independent state have largely been determined by its geographic location at the crossroads of Central, West, and South Asia. Over the centuries, waves of migrating peoples passed through the region and leaving behind a mosaic of ethnic and linguistic groups. In modern times, as well as in antiquity, vast armies of the world passed through Afghanistan, temporarily establishing local control and often dominating Iran and northern India. Assistant Professor of history at George Washington University, Benjamin Hopkins, says Future development is a participation of Afghanis themselves in writing that Future. At the moment there is lot of attention paid to American efforts, those of its allies, those of its regional neighbors, whether they be Pakistan or India, well these are certainly important part of elements they going to condition the opportunities and the limits to Afghan body politics has to deal with, at the end of the day the stability and viability the Afghan body politic in an Afghan question and its going to be buying from the Afghan public into the public structure, that is going to determine, its ultimate legitimacy and stability. tags: News, History of Afghanistan, Tasawar ul Karim Baig, history, Afghanistan The Platform: Implications of Afghan-India agreement for South Asia (Part I) With Afghanistan and India signing a new strategic partnership agreement, what contribution do economic ties have for a stable South Asia with the fast approaching endgame. Meanwhile, the US is so confident in Afghan democracy and its judiciary that it quickly and quietly flew the soldier out of the country. The incident prompted Afghan President Hamid Karzai to ask that US troops no longer patrol villages and rural areas and leave it to the Afghan army. The Defense Department released the name of Pfc. Bowe R. Bergdahl, 23, of Ketchum, Idaho, one day after he was seen in a video posted online as saying he was "scared I won't be able to go home." Even before his name became public, two US defense officials confirmed to The Associated Press that the man in that 28-minute video was the captured soldier. The video provided the first public glimpse of the American. The Pentagon statement said Bergdahl's status was listed as whereabouts unknown on July 1 and was changed to missing-captured on July 3. He is a member of 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Richardson, Alaska. The soldier in the video had his head shaved and was seen with the start of a beard. He was sitting and dressed in a nondescript, gray outfit. Early in the video one captor held the soldier's dog tag up to the camera. His name and ID number were clearly visible. He was shown eating at one point and sitting cross-legged. The soldier gave his name, age and hometown on the video, which was released on a Web site pointed out by the Taliban.
