Bahrain Videos and ClipsSaudi + Bahrain: Decaying dictatorship shored-up by Gulf Union? In Iran, protests backed by the state have been organised against plans to form a European Union-style bloc amongst the Gulf states. Two key American allies, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain would be the first Arab Gulf nations to sign an agreement. Iran has called the idea a US-backed plot to see Bahrain become part of Saudi Arabia. Bahrain has seen anti-government protests for more than a year, with fears now the potential union could strengthen the position of the Sunni rulers over a largely Shia population. Professor Seyed Mohammad Marandi, from the University of Tehran, says it's the Saudi royal family, together with Washington that will benefit. It's the latest violence against a peaceful movement that flared up more than a year ago. But despite the oppression, Washington has resumed arms sales to the Bahraini regime - which is a key US ally, as RT's Gayane Chichakyan reports. In Bahrain, there are no signs of violence dying down - with police firing tear gas at protesters during yet more clashes in the capital Manama. Anti-government demonstrations have been intensifying since the weekend when the world's eyes were on the Formula One Grand Prix race there. But as the world's top drivers went home, foreign criticism of the regime seems to have gone with them. RT's Irina Galushko reports.
