Tajik is synanym to Persian, its referred to eastern Iranian people who live in Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Uzekistan and rest of central Asia. In Turkish areas of Iran, Turks refer to Persian speaking Iranians as Tajiks as well. Balkh was the most prominent city then in the Persian province of Khorasan,and its now in northern Afghanistan. In 1218 , Mavlana Balkhi's father moved away from his ancestorial land, Balkh, in order to avoid the warlike Mongols who were then conquering extensively under the leadership of their leader, Changiz Khan. The family travelled to Baghdad, to Mecca on pilgrimage, and to Damascus and eventually settled in Karaman near Konya in what is now western Turkey. Following this move to Konya, then the capital of the western Persianzed Seljuk Turks, Jalaluddin's father was busy as a theologian, teacher and preacher. Jalaluddin followed in this tradition and, upon his father's demise in 1231 succeeded to his post as a prominent teacher. This part of the world was then known to its inhabitants as Rum, a name derived from the Byzantine Roman Empire that had formerly held it. Jalaluddin is known in the west as - Rumi - derived from Rum. His father Baha-ud Din Valad was a reputed scholar with the title sultan-ul ulema (the king of clerics). The family fled Balkh few years before the Mongol hordes destroyed Balkh in the spring of 1221. The family stayed in Baghdad for about a month, where, Baha-ud Dins lectures were well attended. Then the family performed the Hajj. Baha-ud Din then moved to Eastern Anatolia where he taught at a madressah in Aqshahr for 4 years. Then the family moved to Larende (now Karaman), southeast of Konya (then the capital of Seljuks). In Larende, Rumi married Gowhar Khatun in 1224. The family moved to Konya in 1229. The Sultan, Ala-ud Din Kayqubad had invited Baha-ud Din to his capital city. The Sultan lodged Baha-ud Din in a local madressah, where he started teaching. When he died in 1231, Rumi was 24 years old.. After his fathers death, Jalaluddin studied under Burhan-ud Din Muhaqqiq for about 9 years. Muhaqqiq was a disciple of Baha-ud Din. He taught Rumi Maarif (Baha-ud Dins book). Muhaqqiq then sent him to Syria where for a few years he studied at the reputed madaris in Aleppo and Damascus. On his return Rumi met Burhan-ud Din Muhaqqiq in Kayseri. He urged Rumi to move to Konya and continue his fathers work. It should be mentioned that although Baghdad بغداد was completely destroyed and its citizens massacred only 15 years ago (in 1258), and about half of the total population of the Muslim countries massacred by the Mongol hordes, Muslims still led the world in knowledge, science, literature, and culture. Akmaluddin Tabib had written a commentary on the renowned al-Qanun fi al-Tib القانون فی الطب (The Canon of Medicine) of Ibne Sina ابنِ سینا (Avicenna: 980-1037). The physicians trying to diagnose Mawlanas illness were perplexed as they could not diagnose the illness. Finally they concluded that he himself wanted to die and asked him to tell them about his illness. Around that time Mawlanas friends, family members, disciples, and other people constantly visited him and he consoled them by reciting his ghazals centered on the theme of death. In the Sufi poetry, death is sought since it leads to the soul getting freed from the cage of the body and finally meeting with Allah. Starting in November 1273, the city city of Konya قونیہ was hit by repeated earthquakes. Konya was then the capital of Seljuq سلجوق Turks. The people of Konya became apprehensive and went to Mawlana. He was ultimately arrested from Sus (Ahwaz) in 301 and put to trial. The Vizir slapped him, shaved his beard and had him and one of his friends tied to the gallows for 3 days. A public crier proclaimed that he was an apostle of Qarmathians قرامطۃ (which was not true). He remained a very ascetic Hanbali till his end. He followed the strict asceticism he had learned from Sahl Tustari in his early years. He prayed 400 raka every day and did ablution before every prayer. He slept very little at night. That was a time of great social upheavals in the Abbasid Caliphate, mostly due to unjust policies and the greed of government officials.
