Bombs and gunfire have struck the Afghan capital Kabul... shortly after a visit by Barack Obama. The Taliban claimed responsibility and said the attacks were in retaliation for the US president's visit. Afghan police say suicide bombers attacked a compound where foreign workers live. At least seven people have been killed and almost 20 injured. The US president's visit to Kabul came one year since the killing of Osama Bin Laden by American special forces. In a speech at Bagram airbase, Obama admitted Washington is holding direct talks with the Taliban and said many in the terrorist group are interested in peace. Obama and Karzai also signed an agreement outlining ties in the decade after the planned US troop pullout in 2014. RT's Gayane Chichakyan has more. President Obama in Afghanistan on unannounced trip to sign agreement on US post-war role
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Under intense security and the cover of night, President Barack Obama slipped into Afghanistan on Tuesday. He's there to sign an agreement aimed at cementing a lasting US commitment to the nation after the long and unpopular war comes to an end. For about seven hours, Obama is to be on the ground in Afghanistan, where the United States has been engaged in war in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks more than decade ago. The trip carries major symbolic significance for the president as US commander in chief. And it allows him to showcase what the White House considers the fruit of Obama's refocused war effort: the killing a year ago of 9-11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. Air Force One touched down late at night local time at Bagram Air Field, the main US base here. Media traveling with Obama on the 13-hour flight had to agree to keep it secret until Obama had safely finished a helicopter flight to the nation's capital, Kabul, where Taliban insurgents still launch lethal attacks. Obama is joining Afghan President Hamid Karzai to sign an agreement that will broadly govern the US role in Afghanistan after the American combat mission stops at the end of 2014 -- 13 years after it began.

Panetta: Soldier could face death penalty; Obama;"US 'heartbroken' over Afghan killings"
The US Army soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan men, women and children in a house-to-house shooting rampage could face the death penalty, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. Afghan protesters angered by the weekend killings of 16 civilians blocked a major highway Tuesday as US President Barack Obama said US officials were "heartbroken" by the deaths. A US Army sergeant is accused of killing the Afghan villagers in what top commanders say was a rampage Sunday morning near Kandahar. A protest in Jalalabad, near the border with Pakistan, drew hundreds of people Tuesday, with demonstrators blocking the highway to Kabul, provincial government spokesman Ahmad Zaii Abdulzai said. "We are in the process of trying to reopen," Abdulzai told CNN. Afghan President Hamid Karzai issued a fresh denunciation of the attack Tuesday. And in Washington, Obama told reporters that "the United States takes this as seriously as if it was our own citizens and our own children who were murdered." "We are heartbroken at the loss of innocent life," he said. "The killing of innocent civilians is outrageous, and it is unacceptable. It is not who we are as a country and it does not represent our military."
