Daniel Davis Says Pentagon is Deceiving Public on Afghan War democracynow.org - "Senior ranking US military leaders have so distorted the truth when communicating with the US Congress and American people in regards to conditions on the ground in Afghanistan that the truth has become unrecognizable." That's the assessment of a damning new report by Army Lt. Col. Daniel Davis who returned in October from his second year-long deployment in Afghanistan and says military officials have not leveled with the American public about how poorly the the decade-long war is going. He argues that local Afghan governments are unable to provide the basic needs of the people and that insurgents control virtually all parts of Afghanistan beyond eyeshot of a US base. We speak with Michael Hastings of Rolling Stone, who obtained a copy of the full report and published it last week. "Lieutenant-Colonel Davis is on the right side of history and the fact [is] that he believes in this and is willing to risk [his career]," Hastings says. Taken by surprise, the defending Iraqi armor brigade was swept away in salvos of American tank and missile fire in what became the US Army's largest tank battle since World War II. Douglas Macgregor, the man who trained and led Cougar Squadron into battle, recounts two stories. One is the inspiring tale of the valiant American soldiers, sergeants, lieutenants, and captains who fought and won the battle. The other is a story of failed generalship, one that explains why Iraq's Republican Guard escaped, ensuring that Saddam Hussein's regime survived and America's war with Iraq dragged on. Certain to provoke debate, this is the latest book from the controversial and influential military veteran whose two previous books, Breaking the Phalanx and Transformation Under Fire, are credited with influencing thinking and organization inside America's ground forces and figure prominently in current discussions about military strategy and defense ... tags: News, colonel, macgregor, IRAQ, AFGHAN, STRATEGY, unsound, afpak Col. Col. Rose spoke to WISHH on July 15th while on active duty in Afghanistan. His remarks are coupled with photos taken as part of this USDA Food for Progress effort. His meet-and-greet style is key to a new campaign, but is it realistic? Persuading local people to take lawful control of their towns and putting weapons aside in favour of diplomacy, are all part of Colonel Robert Campbells strategy. I'm very passionate about trying to bring security without shooting and dropping bombs and violence, says Campbell, whos been here for the last 12 months, you pour your heart into something like this, you want to see it through, you want victory. But without local support it could all be for nothing. You are not going to stop violence completely, but your ability to control it, that's what's going to make this place peaceful, states Campbell.
