Kabul Afghanistan Attacks (15 April 2012)
Attackers in Afghanistan launched a coordinated wave of assaults Sunday, targeting a heavily protected district of the capital that includes embassies and the presidential palace, as well as trying to strike an airbase used by American troops, officials said. Government facilities, and the American, German and Russian embassies in Kabul were targeted, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said, saying up to seven locations were attacked. Insurgents also took over a building in front of the Afghan parliament and began firing at it, the Kabul police chief's office said in a statement. But police headed off some attacks, arresting two potential suicide bombers and their handler, and destroying a vehicle full of explosives, the statement said. They confessed to being members of the Haqqani network, police said. The insurgent group sometimes allies itself with the Taliban but is a separate movement. At least 13 insurgents were killed in four different locations around the country, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Seddiqi said. Fourteen Afghan police officers were injured, he said. Another 15 would-be attackers were arrested in Kunduz province plotting similar strikes, said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a spokesman for the chief of police for north and northeast Afghanistan. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying tens of suicide bombers were carrying them out in Kabul and three provinces around the country. Snow adds to Afghan refugees' woes

This is video of the attacks on the ISAF and NATO Security Forces in Kabul, Afghanistan. Afghan National Security Forces, supported by coalition forces, successfully concluded an operation this morning against a small group of insurgents who attacked several locations in Kabul City. Insurgents attacked the International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan headquarters and the US Embassy in Kabul on Tuesday with small arms fire from outside the secure zone surrounding these compounds. Afghan National Security Forces, who have the lead for security in Kabul, responded immediately, to include Afghan National Army helicopters providing air support. Afghan and coalition forces trapped the insurgents in the partially-constructed, multi-story building they were using as a firing position, and conducted a methodical, floor-by-floor clearing operation. The Ministry of the Interior is reporting six insurgents killed in the operation. "The people of Afghanistan have chosen a path to the future with transition," said Gen. John R. Allen, ISAF commander. "In this attack, the insurgency succeeded in killing Afghan civilians, once again demonstrating their bankrupt ideology, which has been rejected by the Afghan people. Afghan security forces responded bravely, contained the insurgents, and systematically eliminated the threat. Once again, I was impressed by the courage, skill and fighting spirit of Afghan forces. Afghanistan - My Kabul 2 of 3 - BBC Culture Documentary, recorded 20.02.2011 In this BBC documentary, journalist and native Afghani Tahir Qadiry revisits his hometown of Kabul. Qadiry meets with not only the historians and politicians, but also the workers, children, and homemakers who represent the over-four-million people who live in Kabul today. Ultimately, the document comes to the point that Kabul consists of many varying regions, classes of people, and amount of progress versus traditionalism. It is evident from the documentary that Kabul is beginning to reach out to the modern age but various factors keep parts of the city from progressing. Narrow streets, hundred year old architecture, and poor sanitation systems seem to encourage old customs and little advancement. The people, though incredibly accepting and welcoming to Qadiry and his crew, still hold many of the fundamental values from Taliban occupation. With all its residents, it has become impossible to manage pollution and the documentary estimates that over 3000 people die every year from poor sanitation. Many families have to go all the way to the central part of the city just to carry water to their homes (Qadiry at one point tries to help a man to carry his water jugs but he can barely make it a few feet up a hill). Although an influx of foreign aid has begun to help reconstruct the new city, many parts have yet to see the money trickle down.
