Fresh debate over US mission in Afghanistan
A US army officer has accused the American military of painting a misleading picture of progress in the war in Afghanistan while glossing over the Afghan government's many failings. The accusations have sparked fresh debate about the US mission in Afghanistan. "What I saw bore no resemblance to rosy official statements by US military leaders about conditions on the ground," Colonel Davis wrote in an article published in Armed Forces Journal, a private newspaper not affiliated with the Pentagon. "Instead, I witnessed the absence of success on virtually every level," he wrote under the headline, "Truth, Lies And Afghanistan: How military leaders have let us down". "How many more men must die in support of a mission that is not succeeding ...?" Troop commanders and politicians say the handover to Afghan troops is going well, but Lieutenant-Colonel Daniel Davis, who has just returned from the country, is challenging those statements in congress. He says that conditions on the ground are ruinous - a conclusion deeply at odds with the picture of progress put forth by the top US military brass. It is a rare instance of a US officer openly contradicting his superiors, and Davis' insights, first published in a military journal on Sunday, have been picked up by several members of congress. This is video of the attacks on the ISAF and NATO Security Forces in Kabul, Afghanistan. Afghan National Security Forces, supported by coalition forces, successfully concluded an operation this morning against a small group of insurgents who attacked several locations in Kabul City. Insurgents attacked the International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan headquarters and the US Embassy in Kabul on Tuesday with small arms fire from outside the secure zone surrounding these compounds. Afghan National Security Forces, who have the lead for security in Kabul, responded immediately, to include Afghan National Army helicopters providing air support. Afghan and coalition forces trapped the insurgents in the partially-constructed, multi-story building they were using as a firing position, and conducted a methodical, floor-by-floor clearing operation. The Ministry of the Interior is reporting six insurgents killed in the operation. "The people of Afghanistan have chosen a path to the future with transition," said Gen. John R. Allen, ISAF commander. "In this attack, the insurgency succeeded in killing Afghan civilians, once again demonstrating their bankrupt ideology, which has been rejected by the Afghan people. Afghan security forces responded bravely, contained the insurgents, and systematically eliminated the threat. Once again, I was impressed by the courage, skill and fighting spirit of Afghan forces. Report says Taliban preparing to retake Afghanistan
www.euronews.net A leaked NATO report claims the Taliban are preparing to retake control of Afghanistan when the alliance's troops leave in 2014. The top secret report, which Britain's 'The Times' newspaper claims was compiled by the US military, also says Pakistan's intelligence service has been helping the Taliban mount attacks against foreign forces. The document reportedly says that the Taliban sees its return to power as "inevitable" once NATO forces have pulled out and that many ordinary Afghans agree.

Afghanistan faces daunting year of challenges
Ten years ago the US army removed the Taliban from power in Afghanistan, and by 2014 foreign troops are expected to be gone from the country. Breaking with its violent past is expected to be Afghanistan's biggest challenge this year, but by no means its only one. The government will have to plan for possible talks with the Taliban, who have re-emerged as a powerful force, as well as take on more responsibility for security. It also needs to put necessary economic and political reforms in place before the country is able to fully stand on its own. Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse reports from Kabul.
