Iran celebrates Nowruz 1391 the ancient Indo-European New Year
Nowruz literally means "New Day"; A day, which starts the Persian new year; In harmony with the rebirth of nature, the Nowruz celebrations always begin on the first day of spring-- which this year has fallen on March 20th. Iranians consider Nowruz as their biggest celebration of the year, before the New Year, they start cleaning their entire houses (which is called Khaane Tekaani), and they also go shopping and buy new clothesh. But a major part of New Year rituals is setting the so-called the "Haft Seen" table with seven specific items. These seven things usually are: Seeb (apple), Sabze (freshly grown greens), Somac (an Iranian spice), Samanoo (sweet wheat paste), Senjed (a special kind of berry), and Seer (garlic) and Serkeh (vinegar). Typically, on the first day of the Persian New Year, family members gather round the Nowruz table or Haft-Seen, and await the exact moment of the arrival of the spring. After the turn of the year, the first few days are spent visiting older members of the family, relatives and friends and children receive presents. The 13-day New Year holiday ends with a ceremony called "Sizdah Bedar" in which, people will leave their homes to go to the parks or spend time outdoors for a festive picnic. Afghanistan, Albania, Republic of Azerbaijan, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are among other countries, which celebrate Nowruz.

The Persian New Year, or Nowruz, is just around the corner. These are common scenes this time around across Iran. People are out in crowds with their friends and family members shopping and preparing for the Iranian holiday season, Nowruz. The first aspect of the Persian New Year is called Khune Tekuni, or Spring Cleaning, that includes washing carpets, drapes, and almost the entire house. The new year is also a good opportunity for Iranians to buy new clothing and accessories. Many store owner's have told Press TV about the joyous mood customers bring to their stores: In harmony with the rebirth of nature, the Nowruz celebrations always begin on the first day of spring-- which this year falls on March 20th. The festivities continue for thirteen days . Nowruz is traditionally celebrated by families visiting one another in the form of short house visits, which are usually reciprocated. Typically, on the first day of the Persian New Year, family members gather round the Nowruz table or Haft-Sin, and await the exact moment of the arrival of the spring. Not only family members visit each other, it is the most crowded time of tourism in the country where Iranians visit many parts of the country.
