For the people, bribery has become a way of life as the average Afghan is said to spend $156 dollars per year on illegal payments. The government of Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, blames uncontrolled foreign spending on the rising costs associated with daily life in Afghanistan. Last year, however, Karzai fired a prosecutor after one case alleged 17 members of the cabinet of being complicit in graft. It is six years since US forces arrived in Afghanistan, but signs abound that the Taliban is fighting back. At 8.15 on Saturday morning the latest strike occurred - a suicide bomber drove directly into a US convoy. This is already the most violent year this country has seen since the fall of the Taliban. The Taliban claims this attack is the 13th suicide bombing carried out during Ramadan. At least four vehicles were destroyed and again, women and children were among the casualties. US and Nato soldiers secured the scene as the wounded were taken to hospital. The attack has sparked speculation that Pakistan's spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was behind the attack. India has not pointed the finger directly at Pakistan in this case, though it has done so over past attacks.
