Beshno az Ney of Mevlana Rumi in of Voice Sadiq Fitrat Nashenas - Afghan singer [English Lyrics]
Listen to the (ney) reed flute, how it tells a tale complaining of separation Saying, "Ever since I was separated from the reed bed my lament has caused man and woman to moan, I want a bosom torn by severance, that I may unfold the pain of love desire, Every one who is left far from his source wishes back the time when he was united with it, In every company I uttered my wailful notes, I consorted with the unhappy and with them that rejoice, Everyone became my friend from his own opinion; none sought out my secrets from within me, My secret is not far from my plaint, but ear and eye lack the light (to apprehend it) Body is not veiled from soul nor soul from body, yet none is permitted to see the soul." This noise of the reed is fire, it is not wind; whoso has not this fire may he be naught! 'Tis the fire of Love that is in the reed, 'tis the fervour of love that is in the wine. The reed is the companion of everyone who has been parted from a friend: its strains pierced our hearts. Who ever saw a poison and an antidote like the reed? Who ever saw a sympathiser and a longing lover like the reed? The reed tells of the Way full of blood and recounts stories of the passion of Majnun. Only to the senseless is this sense confided: the tongue hath no customer save the ear. In our woe the days (of life) have become untimely: our days travel hand in hand with burning griefs. If our days are gone let them go! - 'tis no matter. Do Thou remain, for none is holy as Thou art! Whoever is ...

Beshno az Ney (sung by Ayeda Husain Naqvi in Persian and Urdu - with English translation).wmv
In the opening poem of Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi's Mathnawi, Beshno az Ney, or the Cry of the Reed, we hear the lament of the reed flute as it tells us about the pain of separation. Just as the reed is cut from the reed bed, burned, hollowed, and drilled with holes, so must man in his unnatural state of separation from the Divine go through the trials of life and learn to be that empty before he can turn his suffering into joy, or in this case, beautiful music. It is the pain of separation that will eventually bring him Home. Listen to the cry of the reed flute Listen to its song of separation: Ever since I was cut from the reed bed I have made this crying sound and made men and women weep with me I need a heart torn by separation So you may understand the pain of loves desire Whoever has been taken from his Source Always longs to go back Listen to the cry of the reed flute Listen to its song of separation

Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī (جلالالدین محمد رومی), (known to the English-speaking world simply as Rumi) (30 September 1207 17 December 1273), was a 13th-century Persian poet, Islamic jurist, theologian, and mystic Sufi of high order. Rumi was born in Balkh, Bactria, in contemporary Afghanistan, which at that time was part of the Persian Empire. He lived most of his life under the Sultanate of Rum, where he produced his works and died in 1273 CE. He was buried in Konya, current day Turkey. Following his death, his followers and his son Sultan Walad founded the Mawlawīyah Sufi Order, also known as the Order of the Whirling Dervishes,

Jalal ad-Din Rumi __ I am not from this world
Why think thus O men of piety I have returned to sobriety I am neither a Moslem nor a Hindu I am not Christian, Zoroastrian, nor Jew I am neither of the West nor the East Not of the ocean, nor an earthly beast I am neither a natural wonder Nor from the stars yonder Neither flesh of dust, nor wind inspire Nor water in veins, nor made of fire I am neither an earthly carpet, nor gems terrestrial Nor am I confined to Creation, nor the Throne Celestial Not of ancient promises, nor of future prophecy Not of hellish anguish, nor of paradisic ecstasy Neither the progeny of Adam, nor Eve Nor of the world of heavenly make-believe My place is the no-place My image is without face Neither of body nor the soul I am of the Divine Whole. I eliminated duality with joyous laughter Saw the unity of here and the hereafter Unity is what I sing, unity is what I speak Unity is what I know, unity is what I seek Intoxicated from the chalice of Love I have lost both worlds below and above Sole destiny that comes to me Licentious mendicity In my whole life, even if once Forgot His name even per chance For that hour spent, for such moment I'd give my life, and thus repent Beloved Master, Shams-e Tabrizi In this world with Love I'm so drunk The path of Love isn't easy I am shipwrecked and must be sunk.

I am not from anything, A poem by Rumi, Molana Jalaiddin
What is to be done, O Moslems? for I do not recognize myself. I am neither Christian, nor Jew, nor Gabr, nor Moslem. I am not of the East, nor of the West, nor of the land, nor of the sea; I am not of Nature's mint, nor of the circling' heaven. I am not of earth, nor of water, nor of air, nor of fire; I am not of the empyrean, nor of the dust, nor of existence, nor of entity. I am not of India, nor of China, nor of Bulgaria, nor of Saqsin I am not of the kingdom of 'Iraqian, nor of the country of Khorasan I am not of the this world, nor of the next, nor of Paradise, nor of Hell I am not of Adam, nor of Eve, nor of Eden and Rizwan. My place is the Placeless, my trace is the Traceless ; 'Tis neither body nor soul, for I belong to the soul of the Beloved. I have put duality away, I have seen that the two worlds are one; One I seek, One I know J One I see, One I call. He is the first, He is the last, He is the outward, He is the inward; I know none other except 'Ya Hu' and 'Ya man Hu.' I am intoxicated with Love's cup, the two worlds have passed out of my ken ; I have no business save carouse and revelry. If once in my life I spent a moment without thee, From that time and from that hour I repent of my life. If once in this world I win a moment with thee, I will trample on both worlds, I will dance in triumph for ever. O Shamsi Tabriz, I am so drunken in this world, That except of drunkenness and revelry I have no tale to tell. From Divan-i Shams

Jelaluddin Rumi "This being human is a guest house" Poem animation
Here is a virtual movie of a reading of the 13 century Persian philosophical poem "This being human is a guest house".The poem is read exquisitely by Canadian actor Dennis O'connor who kindly sent me this recording. I have employed the visual services of an unknown Bearded thoughtful looking Victorian gentleman as my visual reader of this ancient poem. Mawlānā Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Balkhī (مولانا جلال الدین محمد بلخى), also known as Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī (جلالالدین محمد رومی), but known to the English-speaking world simply as Rumi,[1] (30 September 1207 17 December 1273), was a 13th-century Persian[2][3] poet, Islamic jurist, theologian, and mystic.[4] Rūmī is a descriptive name meaning "the Roman" since he lived most of his life in an area called Rūm because it was once ruled by the Byzantine Empire.[5] According to tradition, Rumi was born in Balkh, Khorasan (now in Afghanistan), the hometown of his father's family. Scholars, however, argue that he was most likely born in Wakhsh,[6] a small town located at the river Wakhsh in what is now Tajikistan. Wakhsh belonged to the larger province of Balkh, and in the year Rumi was born, his father was an appointed scholar there.[6] Both these cities were at the time included in the Greater Persian cultural sphere of Khorasan, the easternmost province of historical Persia,[7] and were part of the Khwarezmian Empire. His birthplace[8] and native language[9] both indicate a Persian heritage. Due to quarrels between different ...
