Fatema Akbari a brave woman of Hazara people: In a gloomy tent in a grimy Kabul backstreet, Nos, a well-dressed mother of four is feeding planks of wood into an industrial saw. She pauses often to push her hijab out of the way and wipe the dust from her eyes. Around her, other Afghan women are sawing, sanding and polishing furniture, toys and ornaments which may just earn them about US$4 a month to help support their families. This is no sweat shop, but a commercial enterprise set up to teach women in the capital a "man's job". Fatema Akbari, is the driving force behind it; an Afghan widow who was forced to find work on Iranian construction sites when her husband died 12 years ago. She returned to her home country to pass on the carpentry skills she learned to other fellow female victims of three decades of Afghan war. The dozen or so women both inside and outside the snow-covered canvas tent, which serves as the only shelter against a freezing Kabul winter, say they feel privileged to be learning a trade. "We really enjoy this work," Salima says enthusiastically as she and a colleague stand up to their ankles in thick mud, tracing intricate designs in pencil on a length of wood headed for Nos' saw mill. "It is interesting and it gives us a salary. I can send my five children to school and one day they will be able to support me," she says. www.mqm.org http MULTAN: Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Deputy Convener of MQM Dr Farooq Sattar said on Sunday that the party would table a bill for Seraiki and Hazara provinces in the next session of the National Assembly. Addressing a press conference at the Multan Press Club, he said that 23 districts had been mentioned in the draft bill which included two districts from KPK and 21 districts of south Punjab. He said the MQM had already presented a resolution in the National Assembly and wanted the people of the area to recognise it as a historical step for fulfilment of their legitimate demands. He said, "The present government is sincerely making efforts for a Seraiki province. Local intellectuals and the media have done a good job in shaping up public opinion but they need to further intensify their efforts for rights." He said people of the area believed that a separate province and acknowledgement of their identity could help protect their rights. He observed that people of the region were near their destination. He said Quaid-e-Tehrik Altaf Hussain had honoured his promise during his telephone address at a public meeting here on Dec 23 last year to support the creation of a Saraiki province. He expressed concern over the Balochistan issue and underlined urgent steps to address problems of people. MQM table 20th Amendment bill in National Assembly for New provinces in Pakistan
www.mqm.org http The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Tuesday tabled a constitutional amendment bill in the National Assembly seeking creation of new provinces in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The NA session, chaired by the Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi, included MQM's three constitutional amendments regarding the creation of new provinces in the agenda. The 20th constitutional amendment bill was tabled by MQM leader Waseem Akhtar. While the bill specifically mentions Hazara province to comprise six districts of the KP, it suggests that people of 21 districts in south Punjab should decide through a referendum if they want a large Seraiki province or more than one province. Similarly, the MQM bill suggests referendum in Dera Ismail Khan and Tank districts of the KP to determine whether the people there want to remain within the present KP administration or join the proposed south Punjab province. The bill suggests that it should only be approved by the parliament. The government did not oppose the bill and submitted its draft to a standing committee. Speaking to media representatives outside the parliament, MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi said that his party only supported the ongoing movement for the creation of a Hazara province. He said his party talks about the creation of new provinces on administrative grounds. "The amendment bill would be implementable on all four provinces," said the MQM leader.

www.mqm.org http The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Friday once again raised voice on the issue of new provinces and threatened to stage a walk out from the assembly along with coalition partners. MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi, on point of order, said the resolution of new provinces was not included in Friday's agenda of the assembly. On this, Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi said how could it be included when the resolution was not presented in the NA. Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani reiterated commitment for the creation of a Saraiki province and pointed out that consensus on this matter has been evolved and is at mature stage. Speaking in the National Assembly, the prime minister said, after the consensus gaining maturity, it is our responsibility to be more careful so our ultimate objective of a new province may not fall prey to anybody's politics. The prime minister said the government used all platforms and brought the resolution in the Punjab Assembly for the Saraiki province but no debate was held. After failing to get any response, the government was compelled to bring this issue to the National Assembly. "We are more supportive even than you because majority of members is supporting me," he said and called upon political parties to evolve consensus for Hazara province on the pattern of Saraki province. Anna Hazare Ends 12-day Hunger Strike
BY: Anthony Martinez Indian anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare has agreed to end his 12-day hunger strike. This, after the Indian parliament resolved to endorse some of his demands for a new anti-corruption bill. Here's France 24 with the details. "That bill would create an anti-corruption agency to deal with citizens' grievances and protect whistle blowers. The legislation has been on the table for nearly four decades, but now with massive popular support behind Hazare, parliament is scrambling to pass it. MP's have already agreed in principle to Hazare's demands to strengthen the bill, including extending the law to cover all civil servants." And now, thousands of Hazare's supporters are celebrating the endorsement, though the activist himself says the victory is only half-won. As one writer for First Post says... "...Anna Hazare's fast didn't achieve all its goals. ... He didn't even get a resolution passed in favour of his three sticking points. Parliament asserted itself, bent a little to his will, and finally did its own thing." Interestingly, Times of India notes-- Hazare's efforts were already close to an end even before the parliament passed its resolution.
