Hazaras protest against killing of community members
At least five people were gunned down, and six others sustained injuries, when a van carrying people belonging to the Hazara community was ambushed on Spini road in Quetta Thursday morning. The incident sparked protest in different parts of the city, especially in areas dominated by the Hazara community. Having been ravaged by over twenty-five years of civil war and strife, Afghanistan has today lost nearly all that made up its rich cultural past, as well as the pride of its inhabitants, in the days when caravans trod across the Silk Route. Long before these dark years, the various Afghan clans had already seen internal conflicts caused by their geographic isolation and the resulting political and social weakness. The principle of "divide and rule" became very easy to apply to these peoples who had no thirst for conquest. This documentary goes back to the very early periods in the history of Afghanistan and its most ancient inhabitants, some 2.000 years ago: The Hazaras. Over the centuries, they were colonized and their identities gradually eroded. From Arab conquests to the rule of the British-backed Amir Abdul Rahman Khan in the 1870s, right up to the Taliban, who destroyed the Bamyian Buddhas with the help of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, a century of persecution, torture and humiliation finally subdued the Hazara people who were left without even a strand of hope.

Hazaras' brush with war
Afghanistan's Hazara people are worried by the Australian Government's announced tgimetable for troop withdrawals from the troubled country. The third largest ethnic group say there is real danger of the Taliban once again seizing control. Many Hazaras have fled persecution from the Taliban over the past 20 years, risking their lives to seek asylum in countries such as Australia. Peter Gotting met some Hazara refugees using art to speak out.

Hazara community finds peace in Peshawar
The ethnic group Hazara make up about 18 per cent of Afghanistan's population, but many have been forced to flee persecution and war in their country. More than half a million Hazaras now live in Pakistan, but there too they have been targeted by religious extremists for their Shia Muslim beliefs. In Balochistan, where most of Hazaras reside, the group Lashkar-e-Jangvi has declared an open war against them. At least 90 Hazaras have been killed since July 30. But the historic city of Peshawar in the northwest has welcomed them with open arms, and trade seems to be thriving for many members of the small community. Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder reports.

Hazaras Under Attack
My humble attempt to raise awareness about the state of Hazara people in Quetta, Pakistan. In the wake of 2011 attacks on Shia Hazaras of Quetta, the people of Pakistan, and human rights groups around the world should take notice of this dire situation, and act swiftly to prevent it from being a humanitarian crisis to a full fledged genocide.

6 Shia's Killed By Hazaras In Quetta Baluchistan & 5 Others Week Before
Islamabad: Unidentified gunmen of Lashkar e Jhangvi Monday night shot and killed six members of the minority Shia Hazara community in a sectarian attack at Quetta city in southwest Pakistan, police said. Gunmen on two motorcycles fired indiscriminately at a group of Hazara men who were standing outside a shop at Prince Road in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, shortly after 7.30 pm. Four men were killed instantly while two more succumbed to their injuries in hospital, police said. The attackers fled before police cordoned off the area. The shooting caused panic and shops closed down after the attack. Angry members of the Hazara community gathered outside the hospital where the bodies were taken and demanded the arrest of the gunmen. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Dozens of members of the Hazara community have been killed in sectarian attacks in Quetta and nearby areas. These attacks have been blamed by Shia groups on the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba.
