Police chief angers NY Muslims

Nigerian police raids anger local Muslims
Following last Friday's attack that left 185 people in Kano state dead, Nigerian police raided a house in the northern state looking for members of Boko Haram, the Islamist armed group thought to be behind the attacks. Tuesday's raid led to an hours-long gun battle with police, with family members claiming that a husband and wife were among those shot and killed by police gunfire, and denying that they had any part in last week's attack. FBI halts anti-Muslim training
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has said it has discontinued a lecture that taught counter-terrorism agents that mainstream Muslims were violent. The move comes after leaked documents revealed the controversial elements in the FBI's training manuals. According to the FBI documents: most American Muslims are likely to be sympathizers to "terrorist" groups like al-Qaeda. Spencer Ackerman, the journalist who broke this story for the website Wired dot com, told Al-Jazeera why the FBI teachings are "constitutionally dicey". "There is still a real ignorance and to some degree a real fear of Islam that has found a surprising home in the FBI," he said. "If they spend their time and resources going after indicators of violent behavior based on the amount of religiosity a person displays, then first of all they are not going to get actual terrorists, but innocent people."

New reality show to document American Muslims
Reality TV welcomes a brand new program in the United States which follows the lives of American Muslims and makes its debut on Sunday. Aptly titled "All-American Muslim", the show documents five families living in Dearborn, Michigan, which happens to be one of the largest Arab-American communities in the country. The network in charge of the show, TLC channel, which produced shows like "John and Kate plus 8", says the aim of the show is to give a realistic perspective of Muslim culture. Members of the cast include a woman and her Irish Catholic fiancée who plans to convert to Islam, an event planner, and a high school football coach. Nader and Nawal Aoude are expectant newlyweds. Despite their enthusiasm, Nawal shares concerns they have about taking part in the show. "Being American-Muslims there is a watchful eye on the Muslim community and just that word in general, that word Muslim. So we were kind of nervous about the exposure." She hopes the show addresses common questions and misconceptions about her religion. "We're not here to represent Islam, were not here to represent anybody but ourselves, "I get questions for example, 'What does every color scarf mean? 'Like you know, when I wear different colors. Not every color means anything, I just like to coordinate. So there are a lot of questions and within "All-American Muslim" you'll see a lot of these questions answered." The only casualty was the suspected suicide bomber in one of those three. All three attacks failed. In the same year, 179 persons were arrested in the EU for offences related to Islamist terrorism, which shows that more arrests are made for reasons other than the direct preparation of attack, including propaganda. In the same time, separatist terrorism remains the most frequent. In total in 2010, 160 attacks carried out by separatist, mainly in France and Spain. In France with 84 separatist, and "zero" Islamist attacks, 94 Islamists were arrested compare to 123 separatists. Later 14 Islamist were convicted compare to 26 separatist. In the UK, 40 terrorist attack are reported, all carried out by "Northern Irish and Republican terrorist groups". UK does not categorize them as separatist. It is estimated that more than 1.5 million are already in the city, and thousands more are expected to arrive in the coming days. People have traveled from far and wide; some by plane, others by train, coaches or ferries. The price of going on the hajj can be costly, with many pilgrims saving for a lifetime and spending thousands of dollars to perform the pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam. For some people traveling from Britain, for example, the cost of a hajj travel and accommodation package can cost between 2500- to 6000 pounds sterling, the equivalent of $4000 - $9600. But even for those who don't need to travel so far, the price of hajj is still expensive. "The cost of hajj is around 4000 dollars, and 1000 dollars of expenses for the household, food and drink," said al-Hayan, a pilgrim from Morocco.
