Confused Uzbekistan struggle with new walkway, Escalator
We have no idea how people in New York contended with the world's first escalator when it was unveiled there over a hundred years ago. But now thanks to footage from a craftily placed CCTV camera in a shopping centre in Uzbekistan - and the magic of online video sharing - we can take a guess. These pictures show Uzbek shoppers as they try to get to grips with an escalator for the first time - and luckily they seem to have a much better understanding of the emergency stop button. In the first sequence, a brightly dressed mother approaches the escalator with her son, who is young enough to be only half her height. She stands, apparently sizing up the moving stairs before gingerly stepping on - and almost immediately tumbles head over heels backwards Gallantly, her tiny boy - who, typically of the young, seems to have a much better grasp of the modern technology - holds her and stops her tumbling further until another woman can shut it off. In the second sequence, three young women courageously step straight on to the escalator. But they immediately get into trouble They tumble into each other, trying to find their footing. One twigs that the key is to actually stop trying to walk and is carried away. But her two friends are in a pickle, trying to escape the infernal machine and stop each other from getting hurt until a quick-thinking young man can hit emergency stop and they are able to walk up the now stationary stairs, as they are used to.

Penalty kick FAIL! Aleksandr Geynrikh (Uzbekistan) vs Zenit 23 January 2012
Uzbek striker Aleksandr Geynrikh goes from smart-ass to sucker in a glorious penalty FAIL vs Zenit January 23rd, 2012 As the cold winter months persist, world football is witnessing a handful of friendly matches as several leagues remain on hiatus. In that framework Zenit St. Petersburg played a friendly with Uzbekistan's U23 squad on Monday night; a match that the Russians ran out comfortable 5-nil winners. After shipping all five strikes, Uzbekistan had the chance to redeem some pride when they won a penalty in the final moments of injury time. Responsibility fell onto striker Aleksandr Geynrikh to convert from the spot, but forward made a complete pigs-ear out of the spot-kick whilst trying to be the smartest kid in the class. Trying to emulate that famous Johan Cruyff penalty, Geynrikh and his intended partner in crime Vitaliy Pachuyev ended up replicating the ridiculous Thierry Henry and Bobby Pires penalty FAIL that Arsenal fans will likely never forget. Usually that would have been the end of the story, but there was a twist. Despite royally screwing up the penalty, Geynrikh managed to earn a reprieve as the ref blew his whistle for an encroachment against Zenit. But, like a complete muppet, the striker managed to whack the ball over the bar to complete a humiliating double whammy.

Kyrgyzstan Uzbeks under threat
Last year, violence between rival ethnic groups in Kyrgyzstan left hundreds of people dead. Tensions continue, with allegations that security forces in the south have unfairly targeted minority Uzbeks with routine abuses of power. Rights groups back up claims of a campaign of intimidation, but Kyrgz security forces refute the allegations. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports exclusively from Osh.
