yeager Videos and ClipsChuck Yeager Pushing The Limits (The Right Stuff) Chuck Yeager is unquestionably the most famous test pilot of all time. He won a permanent place in the history of aviation as the first pilot ever to fly faster than the speed of sound, but that is only one of the remarkable feats this pilot performed in service to his country. Charles Elwood Yeager was born in 1923 in Myra, West Virginia and grew up in the nearby village of Hamlin. Immediately upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps to serve in World War II. Shot down over enemy territory only one day after his first kill in 1943, Yeager evaded capture, and with the aid of the French resistance, made his way across the Pyrenees to neutral Spain. Although army policy prohibited his return to combat flight, Yeager personally appealed to General Dwight D. Eisenhower and was allowed to fly combat missions again. In all, he flew 64 combat missions in World War II. On one occasion he shot down a German jet from a prop plane. By war's end he had downed 13 enemy aircraft, five in a single day. After the war, Yeager continued to serve the newly constituted United States Air Force as a flight instructor and test pilot. In 1947, he was assigned to test the rocket-powered X-1 fighter plane. At the time, no one knew if a fixed-wing aircraft could fly faster than sound, or if a human pilot could survive the experience. Some say only the Wright brothers -- Orville and Wilbur -- can claim a more significant achievement in the history of flight. At the time, Britain and Germany also were trying to develop a plane that could break the sound barrier, but the United States soon won out with its X-1. It was more rocket than plane, developed specifically to fly through the shock waves of the sound barrier, with Yeager as pilot. "About half of the engineers gave us no chance at all of ever successfully flying beyond the speed of sound. They said it's a so-called barrier and the airplane would go out of control or disintegrate, but I didn't look at it that way." Yeager said he had confidence in the craft. He named it "Glamorous Glennis" for his wife, and described its bullet-shaped body as cozy. "Your knees were just about equal with your shoulders so you could pull a lot of Gs [extreme pull of gravity] without blacking out. It didn't have a prop on it. It didn't have a jet engine. It was just strictly a rocket and it was real slick to fly.". To save fuel the X-1 was lifted by a modified B-29 bomber, then dropped and powered by four liquid oxygen rockets. As Yeager's X-1 approached aviation history and Mach 1 [the speed of sound], the plane began buffeting violently. Continuing to accelerate it smoothed out, and for the first time a sonic boom filled the atmosphere. The success was quickly followed by <b>...</b> tags: News, Chuck, Yeager, airplane, flight, mach Chuck Yeager General Chuck Yeager returns after taking a flight over Nevada and Yuba Counties with The Union photographer John Hart. tags: News, Chuck, Yeager, water, dam, history, river, flight, california What's My Line? Maybe this could not be possible if in 1944 Yeager did not arrive at Sort, a northern catalonian town, after escaping from France when his P-51 Mustang was shot down by a german Fw-190 during World War II. This video depicts when, 66 years later, General Chuck Yeager came back to Sort to remember his lucky escape from german patrols, and got honored now by Spanish Air Force officials, naming him as honorary pilot. It is interesting that Sort means "lucky" in catalan, and there's no doubt that Yeager is one of the luckiest pilots in the world. He has flown combat missions in 2 wars, flown as a test pilot beyond the limits... and still flying fighters often at his 87 years old.
